City of Nampa irrigation season ending soon

NAMPA, Idaho (CBS2) — The City of Nampa will shut down its irrigation system for the season Wednesday, September 28 to coincide with Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District and Boise-Kuna Irrigation District shut-off date.

As the irrigation districts near the end of their allotment, each district determines when they will shut off the water to customers, which includes the City of Nampa. The City of Nampa receives water from three irrigation districts (Pioneer Irrigation District, Nampa & Meridian Irrigation District, and Boise-Kuna Irrigation District). While Pioneer Irrigation District is scheduled to end its season on October 3, the City of Nampa needs water delivery from all three irrigation districts to fully run the pressurized system.

Yearly irrigation assessments are calculated and based on the square footage of a property. The irrigation water is not metered, and the length of the season is dependent on the availability of water.

After a drought irrigation season last year, Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling City formed the Drought Task Force with the goal to develop strategies to educate the community and identify ways to optimize and maximize available irrigation water. Due to the weather’s unpredictability, the best way we can prepare for next year’s irrigation season is to continue being water-wise. The City of Nampa highly encourages residents to continue watering their lawn on an odd/even address cycle through the remainder of the season as it has been helpful in extending our current season.

ADDITIONAL REMINDERS:

Do not use potable (house) water to irrigate lawns as it will increase the water and sewer charges on your utility bill. The City of Nampa does not have enough backup domestic water to fulfill irrigation needs.

The Nampa Waterworks Division reminds individuals and companies that the city valve should not be turned off when blowing out sprinkler lines. The keyed turnoff is for city emergency use only.
