George Segal was born George Segal Jr. on February 13, 1934, in Great Neck, New York. He grew up in a secular household, raised by his parents Frannie and George Sr. Alongside his two older brothers, John and Fred, he developed an early interest in acting after watching the film “This Gun for Hire” at the age of 9. In addition to acting, Segal also learned to play the ukulele and banjo during his youth.

Segal attended George School and later enrolled at Haverford College before transferring to Columbia University’s Columbia College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in drama and performing arts. He played banjo during his college years and performed with various jazz bands.

During the Korean War, Segal served in the U.S. Army as a member of the band Corporal Bruno’s Sad Sack Six.

Career

After studying with Uta Hagen and Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio, Segal began his acting career on Broadway, making his debut in the production “Gideon” in 1961. Around the same time, he signed a contract with Columbia Pictures and made his first film appearance in “The Young Doctors” in 1961.
