BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The culmination of the Mountain West Conference football schedule comes to a head Saturday afternoon as Boise State takes on UNLV in Las Vegas, but the conference is already looking ahead to next season.
The Mountain West has confirmed that a football scheduling agreement for the 2024 season will include Oregon State and Washington State Universities.
The Pac-12 Conference has gone through seismic changes this season as a vast majority of the schools that made up the conference announced moves to other conferences. USC, UCLA, Oregon, and Washington have all decided to go to the Big Ten, with Colorado, Arizona, Arizona State, and Utah heading for the Big 12.
Following the mass exodus announcement, Cal and Stanford announced they would be joining the ACC in 2024, which left just Oregon State and Washington State. Some have now been jokingly calling it the Pac-2, but with their futures uncertain comes opportunity for the Mountain West. OSU and WSU have been battling in court to gain sole voting control over the conference and have agreed to partner up with the Mountain West for the 2024 season.
The Mountain West has announced that next season all 12 teams will play seven traditional conference football games in addition to one contest against either Washington State or Oregon State for a total of eight games, four home and four away. OSU and WSU will not be eligible for the MW Championship game and the games will not count towards the conference standings.
A schedule for next season is expected to be released soon, we will continue to update this story as we learn more.
