One can never deny the influence that Tiger Woods’s father, Earl Woods, has had over his career. Earl Woods was very much responsible for the making of this legend that everyone knows and reveres in the world of golf today. However, not much is known about the man who instilled love and discipline in golf in Tiger Woods from a much nascent age.
Tiger Woods, born Eldrick Woods, was the fourth child of Earl and Kultida Woods. He was born to Earl’s second wife who is half Thai, quarter Dutch, and quarter Chinese in terms of her ancestry. Interestingly, Earl was the one who gave his son the nickname ‘Tiger’ which came from the time when he was serving as an officer in the Vietnam War.
Earl has always been keen on teaching his children golf. His grandchild, Cheyenne Woods, who is Earl Woods Jr’s daughter, is now a professional golfer. Woods Sr. was one of the foremost persons to give some professional advice and coaching to his granddaughter.
He was very much adamant to make Tiger a brilliant golfer. He introduced the now golf legend to the sport in Orange County, California even before Tiger turned two. No wonder, Tiger turned out to be a prodigy in the game, now having won more than 82 PGA Tours and 15 Majors in his career.

Earl Woods first taught Tiger Woods golf around the US military courses in southern California. Earl Sr. himself was quite a golfer, having said to be playing close enough to reach scratch handicap levels in 1975. Although he learned golf at the age of 42, he had quite the prowess for amateur golf and often scored the 70s for 18 holes in a game.
Earl has authored two books that document his experience in training Tiger Woods to the level that he now is. While Woods laid the foundation for golf for young Tiger till age 5, he then sought professional coaching assistance from retired PGA professionals Rudy Duran and John Anselmo.
Woods was a military personnel, having served as an infantry officer during the Vietnam War and with the US Army Special Forces. He graduated from the Defense Information School and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He later worked as an instructor of Military Science and Tactics at the City College, New York.
After retiring from active duty in 1974, Woods started working as an employee at McDonnel Douglas Corp in Huntington Beach, California.
Woods always had the belief that his son would be the legend in the field he was venturing to. Earl had once said, “Please forgive me, but sometimes I get very emotional when I talk about my son. My heart fills with so much joy that this young man is going to help so many people. He will transcend this game and bring to the world a humanitarianism that has never been known before.”
Earl Woods, unfortunately passed away from a heart attack in 2006. In 1998, he was also diagnosed with prostate cancer. Woods is buried at the Sunset Cemetery in Manhattan, Kansas. The Earl Woods National Youth Golf Academy at Colbert Hills Golf Course has been named in his honor.
Nike immortalized the legacy of Earl Woods when they released a commercial depicting the face of Tiger Woods in black and white while the voice of Earl Woods played in the background. The voice was taken from the documentary ‘Tiger: The Authorized DVD Collection.’
