An old video of UFC star Dustin Poirier grappling with ‘World’s Strongest Man’ Brian Shaw resurfaced on the internet recently. Although many regarded Poirier for his striking skills, he had earned a black belt in Jiu-Jitsu and had slick submissions under his sleeve. However, it didn’t help him with the ‘World’s Strongest Man’ who weighed over 400 pounds.
In the video, Dustin Poirier took the bottom position, giving Brian Shaw an advantageous top position (Side control). He did so in an attempt to challenge himself. As such, he tried to evade Shaw’s humongous weight and get up. But Shaw adjusted to keep the weight on Poirier and lay on him. As such, he flattened him out and went in for a rear naked choke. But, ‘The Diamond’ tapped out even before the choke sunk in, stating Shaw’s weight did the damage already. Here is what he said:
I'm not protecting my neck here but just the bodyweight is too much. My lungs couldn't keep up.Dustin Poirier via Shaw strength
Brian Shaw posted this old video on his YouTube channel, ‘Shaw Strength’ in 2021. Shaw excitedly wanted to try out MMA and sought a collab with Dustin Poirier. As such, they had a good session involving bag work, pad work, and finally, a friendly grappling roll. Although he had no experience in grappling, his weight did the deed for him in tapping out the former UFC interim champ. However, Poirier also tapped out Shaw beforehand when he had the top control.
Brian Shaw was a four-time ‘World’s Strongest Man’ who weighed more than 400 pounds, while Dustin Poirier actively competed at the UFC in the lightweight division (155lbs). It was a massive weight discrepancy, but ‘The Diamond’ took on the challenge. As such, Dustin Poirier welcomed a challenge in his next fight, taking on the highly-touted prospect Benoit Sanit-Denis. This fight was scheduled for five rounds as the co-main event of UFC 299.
Dustin Poirier trained alongside ‘World Strongest Man’ Brian Shaw, teaching him a few MMA techniques. They met at the UFC Gym in Colorado in April 2021 to enjoy a nice collaboration between them. As such, ‘The Diamond’ took the initiative and guided Shaw through some MMA workouts. As such, they rolled on the mats in which Poirier tapped out Shaw.
They started out in a side mount position with Dustin Poirier on top. Although ‘The Diamond’ was on top, he couldn’t maintain the position. So, when Shaw used his strength to get up, Poirier transitioned to a back take and eventually submitted the ‘World’s Strongest Man’ via RNC. Although he managed to submit Shaw, Poirier still had difficulty doing it. Here is what he said about the experience:
Just to get my legs around him to take his (Brian Shaw) back to try to hang on to him, he's just such a huge human being. Just getting my arms around his neck is like trying to grab someone's waist. That's how big his neck is.Dustin Poirier via Shaw Strength
Afterward, they repeated reversing the positions, and Brian Shaw tapped out Dustin Poirier with just his body weight on top of him. From this instance, Shaw developed an interest in MMA and continued to train in it. Also, he actively competed in strongman tournaments. As for Poirier, he won via submission against Michael Chandler and lost via knockout to Justin Gaethje in his previous fights. Now, he is facing Benoit Saint-Denis in UFC 299, looking to turn the fortunes.
